In total, the eyesight of 14,335 pupils (7,351 girls and 6,984 boys) was assessed. The main vision problems identified were refractive errors, which were referred to consultations in the wilayas or at the Rabuni National Hospital. There, a complete diagnosis was made and the appropriate optical correction was subsequently provided. A total of 1,937 pairs of glasses were fitted and distributed.

Cases of functional amblyopia due to anisometropia or strabismus, conjunctivitis, blepharitis and one case of lacrimal obstruction were also detected. All of these patients were referred to the Ophthalmology Centre at Bachir Saleh National Hospital in Rabuni for treatment. This centre provides ophthalmological care and also paediatric visual therapy: training sessions for visual functions to improve skills such as focus, eye coordination and spatial perception.

Since January, the visual therapy clinic has treated 24 girls and 15 boys. Depending on each case, they attend the centre on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. Most cases are resolved within three to six months. During this time, face-to-face sessions are combined with daily exercises at home, prescribed by the optometrist responsible for visual therapy. As the therapy progresses, regular follow-ups are carried out to assess progress and make any necessary adjustments.

This Eyes of the Sahara project is funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

["post-34465","noticies","type-noticies","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

Diagnostics and specific therapies for children in the camps - Eyes of the world

<meta name="description" content="Eyes of the world organised eye examination campaigns in 21 primary and secondary schools.
