The Eyes of the world Foundation has presented the results of the pilot project for the \u201cEyes nearby\u201d initiative, a programme designed to bring eye care closer to vulnerable groups in the local community. After 25 years of international cooperation, the organisation has brought its work to Barcelona<\/strong> through a pilot project carried out between July 2025 and July 2026 together with Arrels Foundation, with the support of the Catalan Department of Health and in collaboration with General Optica and “la Caixa” Foundation’s Call for Social Projects.<\/p>\n

During the project, 97 people<\/strong> had their eyesight tested at Arrels’ centres (Taller La Troballa, Llar Pere Barn\u00e9s and Centre Obert). The data reveal a significant lack of previous eye care: 55% had not had an eye examination for more than five years or had never had one<\/strong>, mainly due to the cost (40%) or because they believed they did not need one (30%). The examinations found that 85 people (88%) needed glasses, and more than half of them required two pairs (for distance and near vision). In total, 122 pairs of glasses were prescribed (75 for near vision, 44 for distance vision and 3 intermediate).<\/p>\n

In addition to the eye examinations, 16% of those supported (16 people) were referred to the public healthcare system<\/strong> (13 to Hospital Cl\u00ednic and 3 to Hospital de l’Esperan\u00e7a) for more serious conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma or ocular hypertension. They are already receiving follow-up care or are on the waiting list for surgery.<\/p>\n

The programme was made possible thanks to Arrels’ social support<\/strong>, the coordination of volunteer ophthalmologists and optometrists by Eyes of the world<\/strong>, the development of healthcare referral pathways with the Department of Health<\/strong>, the donation of glasses by General Optica<\/strong>, and the funding provided by the \u201cla Caixa\u201d Foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This project highlights the importance of reducing barriers to accessing eye care for people experiencing homelessness<\/strong>, an area that is often overlooked. Following this experience, the Foundation aims to consolidate the \u201cEyes nearby\u201d programme and extend its reach to other vulnerable groups and territories.<\/p>\n
