Following the very satisfactory results of the first training cycle at the WetLab at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Oruro, a second cycle was launched in August, this time opening the call for ophthalmology specialists from all Bolivian departments interested in improving their surgical skills at a national level.

On this occasion, six professionals (four women and two men) from different departments of the country had the opportunity to improve their surgical techniques with a three-week intensive cycle led by the Ministry of Health and Sports, through its Eye Health Area, under the direction of Dr. Stanislao Tititrico.

Ophthalmology specialists during training in the wetlab

The WetLab is an experimental operating theatre focused on practical training to improve skills in cataract interventions. During this cycle, a module with a gender focus was also included, promoting equity in access to eye health services.

At the end of the training, the professionals put their new skills into practice by performing surgery on cataract patients from rural areas of Oruro.

The aim of this activity is that when the professionals return to their home regions, the communities in these areas can benefit from higher quality ophthalmological and surgical care.

This Eyes of Bolivia project is supported by Orbis.
