Vilalta was born in Manlleu in 1962. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Barcelona. She started her professional career at the Department of Economics and Finance of the Government of Catalonia and at the University of Vic. Since 1992, she is a Senior Lecturer at the Economics Department of the University of Barcelona.

Dr Vilalta has carried out and published studies regarding fiscal federalism and issues related to regional and local public finance. Among her research studies in the latter field, it is worth mentioning her studies regarding fiscal equalization and non-mandatory expenditure in the local administration. She is a member of the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB, in Catalan). Moreover, she has been a visiting lecturer at McGill University, Montreal.

Between 2004 and 2008, she was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the University of Barcelona. Currently, she is the Vice-Rector for Equal Opportunities and Social Action of the University of Barcelona. Moreover, she was chosen by the regional government as a member of the group of experts that calculated the fiscal imbalance of Catalonia in 2005 and 2008. Furthermore, she has been a representative of the Government of Catalonia at the Mixed Committee on Transferrals State-Regional Government.
